How To Find A Dentist

Updated: Apr 20, 2020

A lot of people when moving to a new area and wanting to find a dentist, or when searching for a new dentist in their area, simply pull up google and search ‘Dentist Near Me’. For those in West Orange, they might search ‘Best Dentist West Orange', and for those in Boston they might search something as simple as “Painless Boston Dentist’.

Finding a dental office that you can establish as your dental home is a very important decision. Regular visits are key to a healthy smile. Rather than finding a dentist that a close friend recommends, but is a 2-hour drive from your house, you may want start with the details that work best with your lifestyle and dental care needs.

Start Simply

Make a list of what is important to you when finding a dentist

  • Is the office easy to get to from your home or job?

  • Do they have convenient office hours?

  • Are they a member of the ADA (American Dental Association) or credentialled with another major dental organization?

  • If you have dental benefits, is this dentist in your network?

  • Doctor-patient communication is very important. Do you need translation or interpreter services?

  • Is there a special service I may need, a full mouth dental rehabilitation, cosmetic dental services,or even sedation services.

Begin the Search

Now that you have a sense as to what you will be looking for in a dental office, you can begin the search, but just remember, that every person’s experiences and individual dental health needs are unique.

  • Ask some friends or family members in the area.

  • Your local dental society. In our county, ‘The Essex County Dental Society’ can provide you with a roster of dentist’s names in your area.

  • Ask one of your existing healthcare providers, whether it is your primary care doctor, or eye doctor if they know of a trusted dentist in the area

  • The ADA’s Find-A-Dentist tool.

  • Use an internet search engine such as Google, Bing, Yahoo.

Narrow it Down

After finding a few promising options, take the next steps to ensuring a happy dental future!

· Spend some time on the office’s websites and or social media to learn more about them.

· Check reviews, hours, services, photos, and give the office a call

· If you are unsure you can always schedule a meet-and-greet or tour of most offices.
