What is a Dental Implant?

Dental implants are designed to provide a foundation for replacement teeth that look, feel, and function like natural teeth. The implants themselves are very small titanium posts that are placed in the jawbone where teeth are missing. The bone then bonds with the titanium, creating a strong foundation for artificial teeth. In addition, implants can help preserve facial structure, preventing the bone deterioration that occurs when teeth are missing. Implants are also a great alternative to dentures.

Are you a candidate for dental implants?

Not everyone is a candidate for dental implants, and your doctor will require a detailed consultation and record gathering prior to approving your case for Dental Implants. If you have healthy gums and adequate bone to support the implant, then you can complete this procedure. It is also important to commit to good oral hygiene, including stellar at-home care and regular visits to the dentist.

Do Dental Implants Hurt?

Most of our patients tell us that their dental implants are were not very painful at all—and usually less uncomfortable than expected.

During the procedure

  • You’re fully numb with local anesthesia (similar to a filling)

  • You’ll feel pressure, not pain

  • Many patients say it’s easier than a tooth extraction

After surgery (first 2–3 days)

  • Mild to moderate soreness, swelling, or bruising

  • Usually well controlled with ibuprofen/acetaminophen (often no narcotics needed)

Healing phase (weeks–months)

  • Minimal day-to-day discomfort

  • The bone heals around the implant (you don’t really feel this happening)
